POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Underwriter plays a pivotal role in the underwriting process at Insurate! We’re looking for a motivated and detailed focused individual to join our team! This position requires someone who enjoys analyzing information, solving problems, and building relationships—all while learning the ins and outs of commercial insurance. As an Associate Underwriter, you will work to support the team in evaluating risks and making thoughtful underwriting decisions, while gaining valuable experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
The ideal candidate will have a strong attention to detail, be a self-starter, and be able to work in a remote-first team environment. This position reports to the company’s Vice President of Underwriting. At Insurate we believe in a supportive, team-oriented culture with opportunities for mentorship and growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with underwriting new and renewal workers’ compensation policies, ensuring they align with our guidelines and appetite.
- Review applications, loss histories, inspections, financials, and other supporting documents to assess risk.
- Help analyze pricing, coverage options, and terms to support underwriting recommendations.
- Review and process policy endorsements and mid-term changes, making sure they meet underwriting standards.
- Work closely with brokers and agents to gather additional information and communicate underwriting decisions.
- Keep underwriting files accurate, complete, and up to date in our systems.
- Contribute reports, audits, and ongoing portfolio reviews to support team goals.
- Stay current on industry trends, state regulations, and market conditions.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in commercial insurance or underwriting preferred but not required (especially in workers’ comp)
- Strong attention to detail and a love of organized processes
- Clear and effective communicator—comfortable engaging with both teammates and brokers
- Motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic and a collaborative, can-do attitude
- Thrives in both independent and team-based environments
- Eager to learn and takes initiative
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and comfortable with tech tools
- Well-organized with solid time management skills
- Interest in pursuing insurance designations (e.g., AU, CPCU, ARM) is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree not required
Compensation and Benefits
- Annual salary of $50k-$55k and benefits package including health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 401(k) plan, and paid time off.
